79. Rosh mai rosh, ha poshe Maeliye Lo: Rasul Mir



The poem describes the beauty of the beloved with beautiful similes and seeks reciprocation of love. But at the same time reminds beloved that the beauty will not last long and one should not be proud of it.

روش مے روش ہا پوشہ مٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Rosh mai rosh, ha poshe maeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Rosh: روش : Rage shown to get pampered.
Bosh: بوش : Pride, Insolence, arrogance.

Be not enraged, O garland of flowers,
For beauty’s pride shall not endure long.

زلفِ کاکل زنجیر چھی کنہ زال
الف سپدم قد چون ڈیشتھ دال
سرو شمشاد ہمت عٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Zulf e kakul zanjeer chhi kinih zaal,
Alif sapdum qadd choan deeshith Daal.
Sarv Shamshaad hemat aaeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Zulf e kakul: زلفِ کاکل : Curly tresses
Alifas Daal Gachhin: الِفس دال گژھُن : Bending of straight stature. Alif and Daal are alphabets of Arabic script. Alif is upright and Daal bent like inverted C.
Sarv Shamshaad: سرو شمشاد : Cypress and Box tree. They are beautiful and good statured.

Are those curling tresses chains, or just a snare?
My form bent low before your lofty air.
All hail the cypress bold and the box tree,
For beauty’s pride shall not endure long.

In third verse the poet indicates that he is not as brave as Cypress and Box tree to withstand beauty of beloved.

زُلفِ مُشکین چُھوی آیینس آہ
یُتھ قۄرانس پیٹھہ کنہ بسم الله
یہ چھو لیوکھمت پانہ ذولجلٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Zulf e mishkeen chhui aainas Aah,
Yuth Qoranas petthe kanni Bismillah.
Yi chhu lekhmut paane Zul Jalaeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Zulf e mushkeen: زُلفِ مُشکین : Fragrant tresses
Zul Jalal: ذُولجلال : One of the attributes of Allah.

Fragrant tresses strike awe in the mirror’s face,
Like the Bismillah at the start of Qur'an.
Inscribed by the hand of the Glorious One,
Yet beauty’s pride shall not endure long.

عشقہٕ پیچان چھی ارغوانن منز
کاژہٕ زوٗن دوٚن شاہمارن منز
نقشِ چینن زنّار نٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Ashqeh Pechaan chhi Arghwanan manz,
Kaach zoon donn shahmaaran manz.
Naqsh e Chinan zunnar naeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Ashqeh Pechaan: عشقہ پیچان : Morning Glory Flower (Equated to tresses because the said flower coils around the support it climbs on)
Arghwan: ارغوان : Literally Reddish purple. Blossoms of Judas tree. (Equated to the rosy face)
Kaach Zoon: کاژہٕ زوٗن : Bright Moon. Bright like glass(Kaach is glass. Cognate of Kaanch of Urdu/Hindi). Equated to the bright face covered by tresses that hang like royal serpents.
Naqsh e Cheen: نقشِ چین : A fine line (which usually appears on the forehead and eyebrows in a state of anger or displeasure)
Zunnar: زنار : Sacred thread worn around chest by Brahmans. Equated to the frowning lines or wrinkles on forehead.

Your Morning glories are blooming amidst the crimson flowers,
The bright moon rests between two serpents, regal and coiled.
Wrinkles upon the brow hold like threads sacred,
Yet beauty’s pride shall not endure long.

مدِ آہو چھا کنہ چھی ابرو
خود آہو چشمہ زن چھے جادو
پدمٲنی بدرالجمٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Mad e Aahu chha kinni chhi abroo,
Khod Aahu chashmeh zan chhey jaadoo.
Padmaeni Badr ul Jamaeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Madd: مد : Prolongation mark over Alif. Equated to the eye brows of gazelle.
Aahoo: آہو : Gazelle, Antelope, Deer
Abroo: ابٚرو : Eyebrows 
Khod Aahu: خود آہو : Wild gazelle. خود here means wild like in گلِ خود رو i.e., Wild flower
Padmaeni: پدمٲنی : Beautiful 
Badr ul Jamal or Badi ul Jamal: بدرالجمال : Of rare or wonderful beauty, the beauty that is unparalleled (Name of the fairy with which Saif ul Malook fell in love with. She was imprisoned by a giant amidst mountains and was freed by Saif ul Malook).

Are they eyebrows of gazelle, or are they yours?
Eyes like wild gazelles—enchanting magic flows.
O beautiful Badr ul Jamal,
The pride of beauty will not endure long.

قندٕ کھوتہ کیاہ میٹھی چھی وُٹھ چؠانی
لعل یمن یاقوت رُمٲنی
اکھ مزدار بییہ ۄوزٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Qandeh khotte kyah meeith chhi wutth chaen,
La'al e Yaman Yaqoot e Rummaen.
Akh mazdaar beyi wozaeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Qand: قند : Sugar, Candy
La'al e Yaman: لعلِ یمن : Rubies of Yemen. A ruby from Yemen is very red.
Yaqoot e Roommaeni: یاقوتِ رُمٲنی : A type of very red ruby that is the same color and shape as a pomegranate seed.

Sweeter than sugar are your tender lips,
Pearl of Yemen, ruby—pink to blood-red dips.
Crimsoned and delectable at the same time,
The pride of beauty will not endure long.

مِژ تیرن چھوئی الماسک پھل
نخچیرن سوئی شر وٲنجہ تل
کٔمی ویرن یم تیر ژٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Michh teeran chhui almaasuk phal,
Nakhcheeran sui shar waenji tal.
Kaem veeran yim teer chhaeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Michh teer: مژ تیر : Teer e Michhgaan: The arrows of eyelashes.
Almaas: الماس : Diamond. Shaped diamond is like an arrow head.
Nakhcheer: نخچیر : Prey
Shar: شر : Longing, Desire
Veer: ویر : Brave

The arrows of brows bear diamond-sharp grace,
Their prey still hold that longing in the heart.
Which brave soul has withstood such piercing arrows,
The pride of beauty will not endure long.

زأل مستس تل کنہ وٲلیے لو
سونہ دورن چھی موختہ جٲلیے لو
پوختہ کارن کٔم سنبٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Zael mastas tal kanneh waeliye lo,
Sonne duuran chhi mokhte jaeliye lo.
Pokhte Kaaran kaem sambhaeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Zael mass: زأل مس : Curly hair
Kanneh wael: کنہ وٲل : Earrings 
Pokhte kaar: پوختہ کار : Pious. However, it may mean skillful master here.

Earrings glint beneath the curly tresses,
Golden hoops with pearl-wrought lattices.
Which skillful master decked them onto you?
Yet, the pride of beauty will not endure long.

حسنہ باغچ مستور چھیکھ مسول
نتہ سورگٕچ ما چھیکھ ینبرزل
مسہ چھورکھ کم کلہٕ وٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Husneh baagich mastuur chekh Maswal,
Natte Sorgich ma chekh Yimbirzal.
Masseh chhivrakh kaem kalle-waeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Maswal: مسول : Iris
Chhuvrun: چھورُن : Intoxicate
Kalwal: کلوال : Tavern keeper, cupbearer, one who serves wine.

You are the hidden Iris in the garden of beauty,
Or the Yimbirzal (that blooms) in paradise.
Which cupbearer intoxicated you with the wine?
The pride of beauty will not endure long.

ہیوند نچواہ سردار ماچینس
روٹ گلالن سوئی داغ منز سینس
خال ڈیشتھ زون گیہ خٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کٲلیے لو

Hyond nechva sardar Macheenas,
Rott Gulaalan sui daag manz seenas.
Khaal deeshith zoon gayi khaeliye lo.
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Hyond nechuv: Indian offspring. Most probably equated to black complexion. Macheen: China. Tibet used to be called as Lokut Cheen in Kashmir. Most probably equated to the red silk of China.

I have come to the conclusion above only because the next verse supports it very well. The second verse says that the same stain was borne by the Wild tulip in its chest. If we look closely, the centre part of the wild tulip is black and surrounding area of the petals is red.

This may refer to the black decorative dot(Bindi) on the rosy forehead. Exactly like the form of wild tulip. The beloved of Rasul Mir's poems is usually Hindu damsel.

The Indian bloom reigns over the China,
The wild tulip bears that very stain within.
The moon, upon seeing her skin, pales out,
Yet, the pride of beauty will not endure long.

سینہ دودمت رسُل ہاوی کس
چھوئِی نہ انصاف یوان گج میانی وس
عشقہ نارن کأتیاہ زٲلیے لو
بوش حسنک روزی نے کالیے لو

Seeneh dodmut Rasul haavi kass,
Chhui ne insaaf yiwaan gaejj myeen wass.
Ashqeh naaran keetya zaaeliye lo,
Bosh husnuk roozi nai kaeliye lo.

Wass: وس : Bone marrow or metaphorically core i.e., heart.

The bosom burnt, to whom will Rasul reveal it?
No mercy from you, my heart dissolves within.
The fire of love has scorched countless souls,
But the pride of beauty will not last long.
