2. Frienemies: Kashmiri Proverbs

All of us have seen people in our lives who pretend to be friends but are worse than enemies. Kashmiri language have some proverbs for such people or situations like that:

دارۄو کمِیوٗ پھاٹوُکھ؟

! پننی پٔنی

Daarvo kamyu faatvukh?

Panini paenn!

O log! What broke you?

My own wedge!

Daar is big log of wood and ponn is wedge made of wood. Log itself is unbreakable but once we use wedge made of its own material it is shredded into pieces even by very small blows. So what broke the unbreakable log? Wedge—made of its own wood.

دچھ کمِیوٗ کھیی؟

پردیو ! مے دۄپ پننیو ما

Dachh kamyu khey?

Pardev ! Mey dopp panenev ma!

Who ate the grapes?

Strangers! I thought our own related ones.

Benefit of one's fruit, if taken by strangers doesn't feel bad when relations are estranged.

Fruit here is metaphor for any thing belonging to the owner.

پنِٕن کۄکِٕر نۓ بد اسِہا

لُکہ ہِیندِس مرِس ما ترٚوِہا ٹھوٗل

Panin kokir nai badd aasiha,

Lukeh-hindis marris katti traviha thool.

If our own hen weren't bad,

It would not have laid eggs in another's pen.

Used for unreliable friend or relative.

ہٹیوکھ وندی رتھ تہ نٹِٕچ دیی نہ ترؠش

Hatyuk wandee rath te nattich diyi ne tresh

Will sacrifice the blood of throat onto you but will not give drinking water from the earthen pot.

It means pretended affection.
