81. Poshe Matti Dilbar Mey Traevith Kot Gachhakh: Ali Mohammad Shahbaz

Poshe matti dilbar mey traevith kott gachhakh,
Yath dilas armaan thaaevith kott gachhakh.

O my flower-fancier beloved, leaving me behind where are you going?
Giving rise to desires in my heart, where are you going?

Myani kanni chui baakhuda poz nai vanakh
Loal raayan aab traevith kott gachhakh?

Loal raay: لول راے : The longings of love
Aab traavun: آب تراوُن : To water for growth like in plants

By God’s name I implore you—hide not the truth from me,
Watering the love’s longings, where are you going?

Drakh yodd myaanev watav thahraav kar
Babri tann ithkaen sajaevith kott gachhakh?

If ever you tread through my alleys, pause for a while,
With Sweet Basil like form so adorned, where are you going?

Bulbulan taamath vyesrovuth chey hosh
Poshe chamanan mushknaevith kott gachhakh?

You have unsettled the sense of even Nightingales,
Aromatising the flower-beds, where are you going?

Wale barri heth chhukh pataey jaanawaran,
Pech kham zulfan banaevith kott gachhakh.

With snares you are following the birds (preys),
Making whorls of your forelocks, where are you going?

Wale-Baer is a noose made of Horse hair and used to catch small birds. Another name for Wal-waesh.

Chhihen andar chukh lachhibaddi yim vih karaan,
Saase baedd dil wargalaevith kott gachakh.

Chyuh: ژیہو : Seconds, instants
Vih: وہھ : Manifestations, changing forms rapidly.

Instantly you are manifesting variedly a million times,
Thousands of hearts you enticed, where are you going?

Shahbaaz’o loal vyetravun chu krooth
Yuth mollul sauda chukaevith kott gasakh?

Mollul: مۄلُل : Valuable, worthy.

O Shahbaz! Enduring the love is very painful,
Having weighed price of such valuable merchandise, where are you going?

Sung version:

The one produced by T-Series and sung by Noor Mohammad as Poshe Matti Janaan doesn't contain all the stanzas.

  2. First of all, thank you and congratulations for what you are doing. You are trying your bit to keep our language alive by making it accessible to younger generations, so thank you for that. As someone who also likes to translate Kashmiri poetry, this blog is nothing less than a treasure.

Secondly, I have couple of suggestions. If it is possible, create a blog on wordpress or 'medium' both of them have better UI than blogspot. Also, create a social media account that will further make it accessible to masses. Be blessed :)

  3. Thanks. Tried to create both Wordpress and Medium blogs but found them complicated (or maybe I am not tech savvy). I am on social media and post these things on Kashmiri Poetry Page on Facebook. Since there are not many takers for Kashmiri Poetry, the page doesn't grow much and therefore doesn't seem to have good reach.

    1. I mean, wordpress and medium show up often in Google searches. I've been looking for Kashmiri poetry translation since ages and even yesterday I found your blog by chance even though you've been blogging from many years.

      Keep up the good work.

  4. If I may add further, you'll find many takers for the songs/poetry that's trending or has been famous in past.

Take any sufi composition of Rashid Hafiz and I'm sure people want to know what they have been listening to.
