1. Heredity/Traits/Khaslat: Kashmiri Proverbs

Some Kashmiri Proverbs on heredity/Traits or what we call as "Khaslat":

Traits don't wither away:

Waatul banayakh baadshah;
Tami thuray daalu mohar.

Mohar: Currency

A cobbler was made King;
He got the leather currency minted.

Haaer sund nai hor aasi;
Tyok ti aases.

Hore: The spotted cattle

If spotted cattle doesn't bear the spotted offspring;
A single spot will still be there, atleast.

Kameenas khizmath gayi zameenas choab

Servicing a vile person is like beating the earth i.e., earth is not affected howsoever

Hooin lott ba-ryakh qondih;
Su draav toareh ti hooin lottui.

The dog's tail was stuffed into the klin;
It still came out a dog's tail.

Means it did not straighten even under the immense heat and pressure of the klin as it's trait is to be crooked.

Other version is that it was stuffed into Qandeel; a tube where beautiful heron feathers are kept, but it still came out to be the dog tail despite being in the company of beautiful feathers.

Soareh ragg meyli;
Warreh ragg meyli ne.

Ragg: Vein/Affection

The affection of pig may come together,
But not the affection of step-relative (especially step-parents or siblings-more specifically used for step-mother)

Kaav chhejyakh satti saabni
Kaavas krehniyar challi ne zanh

Crow was washed by seven soaps
The blackness didn't either away at all.

Maaji maasi; koari kus kaasi

Mother(had it), maternal aunt(had it);
Who will annual it from the daughter!

Used when a girl faces afflictions (usually at in-laws) it's said that she inherits it from her mother and maternal aunt. Hints towards patriarchial society where women invariably suffer.

Chhotth tay tuliv te baddih deyreh

Even if you choose dirt, choose from a big heap.

The traits are infectious. When you are in the company of great things, u get traits of those great things.

There is also a Shruk by Sheikhul Alam describing the traits:

اوْن کھوژِ نہِ انہِ گٹے
وودُر کولہِ پھٹہِ نہِ زانہہ
ہوٗنس أڈِج روٹہِ نہِ ہٹے
کمینس خٔدمت ویژِٔ نہِ زانہہ

Onn khoachi ne anni gattay,
Wodur koli phatti ne zanh.
Hoonis adij roati ne hattay,
Kameenas khedmat wechhi ne zanh.

Wodur: Otter
Rotte: One who, or that which, obstructs.

The blind will not be scared of darkness,
An otter will never drown in a stream.
The bone will not get stuck in dog's throat,
A mean person will never approve service (to him).

Explanation:
Some qualities (good or bad) are innate and can never die. A blind person doesn't not fear darkness as darkness is innate to him. An otter's innate quality is to be in water and therefore it will never drown in it. A dog is never choked by the bones it eat as it is it's innate quality. Likewise, if you serve a mean person day and night, he will never approve of what you do for him because it is his innate quality.

Pic: There are many spotted cattle in there.
