51. Nyama Saeb: Andre Nebrai Basith Paanai


Introduction: The poem is about the existence of God and the place to find Him. According to the Poet, God resides within a person and one must search Him inside i.e., inwardly rather than outwardly. And once a person finds the God within him, he finds His manifestations all around. The phrase "Bu ma zaanai" i.e., "I don't know" is being humble and modest and is forte of Sufis. Throughout the poem, Nyama Saeb makes the reader feel that he knows God in His manifestations but yet he claims that he doesn't know anything.

اندرٔ نیبرۓ بستھ چِھہ پانے

ژسِتھ آو یار، بو ما زانۓ ۔

ھو الموجود چُھہ قوٌرانۓ

ژسِتھ آو یار، بو ما زانۓ ۔


Andre nebrai basith chhi paanai,

Chasith aaw yaar; bu ma zaanai.

Hu Al-Mojood chhu Qoraanai,

Chasith aaw yaar; bu ma zaanai.


Chasith aaw: ژسِتھ آو: Bloom impromptu or manifest immensely or flock together in great numbers.

Hu Al-Mojood: ھوالمجود : He is the One Who Exists. One of the attributes of the God.


Within (&) without Himself inhabiting (everywhere),

The beloved is manifested immensely; (and yet) I do not know.

"He is the One who Exists" is attested in the Qur'an,

The beloved is manifested immensely; (and yet) I do not know.


Explanation: The God exists within and without a human being and same is attested in the Holy Book, Quran as well. The one who recognises this fact sees God manifested immensely everywhere. As Quran says, "And indeed We have created man, and We know whatever thoughts his inner self develops, and We are closer to him than (his) jugular vein,"

وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡاِنۡسَانَ وَنَعۡلَمُ مَا تُوَسۡوِسُ بِهٖ نَفۡسُهٗ ۖۚ وَنَحۡنُ اَقۡرَبُ اِلَيۡهِ مِنۡ حَبۡلِ الۡوَرِيۡدِ‏

As Allama Iqbal also says,

ہر کہ پیماں با ھوالموجود بست

گردنش از بندِ ہر معبود رست

جس کسی نے بھی "وہی موجود ہے" سے عہد باندھا اس کی گردن شک و شبہ کی بنیاد پر بنائے گئے ہرمعبود سے آزاد گئی۔


وجود دریاو، دل چھوئی صدف

ژٔ مو زان گچھ ہدف بر کف۔

سپد ڈنگل، لبکھ شہوار

ژسِتھ آو یار، بو ما زانۓ ۔

Sapad dungal, labakh shahwaar,

Sadaf: صدف: Oyster shell/Mother of pearl

Gachh: گچھ: Limestone

Hadaf bar Kaf: ہدف بر کف: The target within the reach of hand.

Dungal: ڈُنگل: Diver

Shahwaar: شہوار: (Pearl) befitting kings


His existence is (like) a river, (your) heart is the pearl,

Don't take it(heart) as limestone (a) target within the reach of hand.

Become the diver, you will find the Regal pearl.

The beloved is manifested immensely; (and yet) I do not know.


Explanation: Your heart is like a pearl in the river but you have to toil hard to know it's existence. Your heart, a pearl, is not common like limestone that you will find handy. You have to dive deep into the river (existence of God) and only then will you find the pearl befitting the kings i.e., an enlightened heart. It means you will find the existence of God in your own heart once you dive deep into His existence. Limestone and pearl have almost same composition and colour but vary in value.


گژھُس محرم، وُچُھن ترأوِتھ

پنے پن کیا چھہ ویژھ نأوتھ۔

ژٔ مو گژھ مس نرگس زار

ژسِتھ آو یار، بو ما زانۓ ۔


Gachhus mohram, wuchhun traevith,

Pannai pann kya chhi wechhenaevith.

Chi mo gachh mas Nargis-zaar,

Chasith aaw yaar; bu ma zaanai.


Pannai pann: پنۓ پن: Every strand of thread.

Wechhenaevith: ویژھ نأوتھ: Explained in detail.

Mas: مس: Intoxicated, entranced.

Nargis-zaar: Daffodil meadow.


Become (His) confidant, get to know Him inside out,

See how threadbare is He explained.

Don't be entranced by the daffodil meadows,

The beloved is manifested immensely; (and yet) I do not know.


Explanation: Once you became His confidant, you will see how clearly and detailed is He explained. Don't be entranced or absorbed in the colourful world around you and get deviated. Worldly attractions are equated with the daffodil meadow. He is manifested immensely all around only if your inner eye has opened to look outwards for Him.


گژھو مشتاق میانس منز

وُچُھن کیا چِھہ پُر سامان سنز۔

کُسو انوار، کُسو اتوار

ژسِتھ آو یار، بو ما زانۓ ۔


Gachhu Mushtaq miyaanas manz,

Wuchhun kya chi pur samaan sanz.

Kussu anwaar, kussu atwaar,

Chasith aaw yaar; bu ma zaanai.


Miyaan: میان: Sheath, Scabbard (of sword)

Samaan sanz: سامان سنز: Armed ready for battle


Become desirous inside the scabbard,

See how (battle) ready is He waiting with all the things.

Which splendour, which stages,

The beloved is manifested immensely; I do not know.

Explanation: Becoming desirous inside the scabbard may mean desiring in the safety of seclusion. First stage of seeking God is seclusion. It protects the fledgling lover from extremes of ego, flattery and show. Poet says that by entering into the seclusion desiring God there, you will see God is already waiting ready for you. And once you both meet then God is not manifested in "splendour" terms or "stages" terms but is manifested immensely and quickly without succession like in a battle there are no stages but all stages culminate just at the first call of action.


ونۓ بو سر، ژیْتس تی تھاو

اندٔر دُر چُھوئ، نیبِٔر پریزناو۔

کھٹِتھ یی چھوئ تی آشکار

ژسِتھ آو یار، بو ما زانۓ ۔


Wanai bu sirr, cheytas ti thaav,

Andirr Durr chhui, nebirr preznaav.

Khatith yi chhui ti aashkaar,

Chasith aaw yaar; bu ma zaanai.


Sirr: سِر: Secret

Cheytas: ژیْتس : Consciousness

Durr: دُر: Pearl

Khatith: کھٹِتھ: Concealed


Let me confide a secret, keep it in your consciousness,

The pearl is inside (of you), recognise it outside (of you).

Whatever is concealed is manifest,

The beloved is manifested immensely; (and yet) I do not know.


Explanation: It's in continuation of the above lines. God is inside of us and yet isn't hidden. If we try to seek him sincerely, whatever is inside will be manifested outside for us to know His existence.


چھو نو نعموؔ بیگانہ کانہہ

گھرے کرتن سرۓ بادشاہ ۔

یُسوئ وانگُج، سوئ خانہ دار

ژسِتھ آو یار، بو ما زانۓ ۔


Chhu no Nyamov begaaneh kanh,

Garray kartan saraiyy badshah.

Yusui wanguj sui khaanedaar,

Chasith aaw yaar; bu ma zaanai.


Begaaneh:بیگانہ :Stranger

Saraiyy: سرۓ: Search by way of remembrance/bearing in mind

Wanguj: وانگُج: Tenant


O Nyama! He is no stranger,

Search the King within the home.

The one as Tenant is Himself the Landlord,

The beloved is manifested immensely; (and yet) I do not know.


Explanation: This is most striking stanza. Here the poet says God is not someone stranger. You can search Him within yourself. He is Himself the tenant and Himself the landlord i.e., He is not separate from your heart. He is the Heart and He is what is in the Heart.
