49. Nyama Saeb: Afsoos tas kyuth...
افسوس تس کُیوتھ یُس اکھا بے یار مرتھ گو
در آرزوے یار، بے دیدار مرتھ گو
Afsoos tas kyuth yus akha be-yaar marith gov,
Dar Aarzoo e yaar, be-deedar marith gov.
Sorry for the one who dies without a beloved,
In the longing of beloved, dies without catching a sight (of beloved).
Explanation:
It is really a matter of loss when a person doesn't have a beloved or when he/she doesn't reach the beloved. Beloved here is God.
مشہورِ جہان را پومپٗور وار وُچھتن
درِ نار ڈیوٹھُن یار، یک بار مرتھ گو
Mashhoor e Jahan ra pompuur waar wuchhtan,
Dar naar dyuuthun yaar, yak baar marith gov.
مشہورِ جہان را: World famous
ڈیوٹھُن: To see
یک بار: At once
Watch the World famous moth very finely,
Seeing its beloved in fire, died at once.
Explanation:
The moth on seeing its beloved in fire jumps into the fire and becomes one with the beloved. Wahdatul Wajood is expounded in this couplet.
از دیدۂ ماہ رو زاھد دیدہ ندارد
از ترس خدا را بہ دیوار مرتھ گو
Az deeda e Mah-roo, Zahid deeda na daarad,
Az taras khuda ra ba-deewaar martih gov.
ماہ رو: Moonfaced
Seeing the moonfaced beloved, the devout hasn't seen (anything else),
By God's compassion, died (watching) under the wall.
Explanation:
A person who finds the beloved doesn't care about anything till death and is all time engrossed in the beloved.
بر زھد بہ تقویٰ دل نہ تو ہرگز
بلبل صفت باش بہ گلزار مرتھ گو
Bar zuhud ba taqwa dil na tu hargiz,
Bulbul sifat baash ba gulzaar marith gov.
Don’t (content) your heart with piety or fear of God,
The nightingale of qualitative company died for the flower-garden (beloved).
Explanation:
Piety or fear of God are nothing in front of the love of God even though these qualities are some of the greatest qualities a human being must have. The nightingale being surrounded by the company of qualitative beings all around in the garden still preferred to fall for the beloved garden only.
گل گۓ، گونچہ گۓ، چمن برگ ریز گۓ
در باغ وچھان وچھان نعمہ گلِ رخسار مرتھ گو
Gul gai, gonchi gai, chaman bargrez gai,
Dar baag wuchhaan wuchhaan Nyama gul e rukhsaar marith gov.
برگ ریز: Autumn/Fall/ Withering away
گلِ رخسار: Rosy cheeked
Flowers withered, bouquets withered, the garden withered,
Seeing the (withering of) garden Nyama, the rosy cheeked (lover) died.
Explanation:
All the love and its manifestations are possible in the youthfulness only. Once the elements of youthfulness wither away with time, the youthfulness in entirety vanishes and a person becomes entitled to the first couplet again i.e.,
افسوس تس کُیوتھ یُس اکھا بے یار مرتھ گو
در آرزوے یار، بے دیدار مرتھ گو۔۔۔۔۔۔۔۔
Note: The persian words/lines in the poem are either wrongly copied by the copyist or the poet had not a good hold over persian language but nevertheless used it in the poem as was custom those days. The prepositions and conjunctions in the persian lines are incoherent and the meaning/translation is guess work after considering theme of the current poem and the recurrent theme of love poems.
