44. Lall Dedh: Aami panne sodras

 آمہِ پنہء سوْدرس ناوِ چھس لمان

کتہِ بوزِ دے میون, مے تہِ دیہِ تار

آمین ٹاکین پونی زن شمان

زو چھم برمان, گرءِ گژھ ہا

Transliteration:

Aami panne sodras naavi chhas lamaan,

Kati boazi daye myon, mey ti diyi taar.

Aamen taaken pooin zan shamaan,

Zu chhum bramaan, garre gachh ha.

Vocabulary:

سودر : Sea

دے: God

آءمی ٹاک: Unbaked pottery utensils

شمان: Wasting imperceptibly by absorption

برمان: Wandering, Roaming. Another meaning of braman is a melancholic wish.

Grierson's translation:

With a rope of untwisted thread am I towing a boat upon the ocean.

Where will my God hear? Will He carry even me over?

Like water in goblets of unbaked clay, do I slowly waste away.

My soul is in a dizzy whirl. Fain would I reach my home.

Jiya Lal Koul's translation:

With a rope of loose-spun thread am I towing a boat upon the sea,

Would that God heard my prayer and brought me safe across!

Like water in cups of unbaked clay I run to waste.

Would God I were to reach my home!

Nandlal's translation:

کچّے دھاگی کی مدد سے ناو کو کھیتی ہون مین

درمیان دریا کے متواتر جو ڈانواڈول ہے

کاش! سن پاۓمرا مالک مری آواز اب

اور اتارے پار مجھکو اپنے رحم وفضل سے

حال اپنا کیا سناؤں کچھ کہا جاتا نہیں

میں ہوں اک کچّا سا برتنجو نیا مٹّی کا ہو

اور جس سے پانی رستا رہتا ہو آٹھوں پہر

روح کو خواہش ہے کہ پاۓ اپنا یہ اصلی مقام

My translation:

With the raw (weak) thread I am towing a boat across the sea,

I wish God grants me the prayer and let me too cross it.

Like water in unbaked utensils, I imperceptibly loose myself,

My soul is wandering, I wish to go home.

Explanation:

I am trying to cross this world with raw deeds. I pray to God to accept these deeds and make me successful. My deeds are imperceptibly wasting away but my soul is melancholiously wandering and I wish to meet my Creator (despite the weak deeds).

Last line resembles the theme of the Song of Reed of Moulana Rumi

هر کسی کاو دور ماند از اصل خویش

 باز جوید روزگار وصل خویش‌‌

Every one who is left far from his source wishes back the time when he was united with it.
