27. Sochh Kraal: Dapyomai balyaras...
Dapyomai baalyaaras yaaer laagav.
Tami dopnam bozvun chhus, koane laagav.
I told my beloved, “Let’s pretend to be friends”.
He said, “Why not, I am all ears”?
Explanation:
If they are in love already then why insist on friendship in this couplet? In Kashmiri language when we say “Yaar Laagun” it is pretended friendship wherein main goal is to derive advantage from the other party. In present case the benefit to be extracted from the friendship is the information/knowledge about the existence of the God, love etc. Second line confirms it because the beloved knows that lover is seeking something by insisting on pretending friendship. Therefore, the beloved says, “bozvun chhus”. In kashmiri language, it is used when a person senses the intention of the other party but still wants to hear it so as not to make the other party feel that his intentions are evident to him. This will become clear from the succeeding couplets wherein the lover asks questions or requests information but the beloved answers in such a way that the lover is left guessing. And despite being in love, the poet is disappointed on learning that its only God that decides who can be his lover.
Dapyomas boznaavtam chhus boh bandai.
Tami dopnam bozvuni gayi sharmandai.
I requested, “Tell me all, I am your servant”.
He told, “The ones who heard have become humbled”.
Explanation:
In response to the request regarding information about Himself, the lover doesn’t get straight answer. Instead, he is apprised that the ones who learnt about Him are now humbled. It suggests that once they knew about Him, they were humbled because of sheer difference between man and God's power!
Dapyomas meyti baavtam panun aasun.
Tami dopnam paan panun gachhi tharri kasun.
Tharri: ٹھرّ : To conceal, hide
I requested, “confide in me state of Your existence”.
He told, “annihilate your own existence clandestinely”.
Dapyomas kya chhi andar, kya chhi nebar?
Tami dopnam yi chhi nebar ti chhi andar.
I asked, “What lies within(inside), what lies without(outside)”?
He told, “What ever is without(outside), that very is within(inside)”
This could mean two things:
1. Whatever existence of the God is hidden from the senses is manifested openly throughout the universe.
2. Whatever existence of the God away from eyes is shown to the eyes by the Prophet (SAWW).
Dapyomas nokte oas na te aaw katay.
Tami dopnam pokhte sapdak ashqe watay.
I asked, “Weren’t you secret, then how did this secret appear”?
He said, “You will become mature only in the path of love”.
Explanation:
Nokte: نوکتہ: Nukta in sufism means a secret between God and his devout and this secret is incessantly delivered by God to his devout. The path to know this secret is one of love.
Dapyomas nokte ashqun baav meytay,
Tami dopnam baawayay thaavakh chi katay?
I requested, “confide in me the secret of love”.
He asked, “If I confide, where will you keep it?”
Explanation:
The secret of love cannot be held by the one who is not mature in love. The preceding couplet affirms it.
Dapyomas yeech kya chhey nokte geeri?
Tami dopnam karwun chhus dastgeeri.
Nuktagiri: نوکتِہ گیری : Criticism/Reproach
Dastagir: دستگیری: Help
I asked, " Why are you so much condemning"?
He said, "I am the one who is helper"
Explanation:
It's said God may punish a person even for just a small misdeed and yet forgive big sins.
Dapyomas nokte giri kya chhui haesil,
Tami dopnam yi chhi haesil ti chhi waesil.
Waesil: وأصل : One who is admitted to or enjoys the company of the beloved
I asked, "What do you get out of this condemnation"?
He said, "The result is that you reach Me".
Explanation:
Those who fear this reproach are very much wary about their conduct and therefore only such persons meet God.
Dapyomas adde katen chhi chey muqaam,
Tami dopnam na chi subah na tati shaam.
I asked, "Where is your abode"?
He said, "Neither is there dawn nor is there dusk".
Explanation:
God's abode is free from the constraints of time and space.
Dapyomas kenh chhi abaad kenh chhi waeraan,
Tami dopnam ami seeit chhem kaaem neraan.
I said, " Some are blooming, some desolate".
He said, "This makes my work get done."
Explanation:
Abaad are those whose hearts remember God all the time. Desolate are those whose hearts are empty of the remembrance of God. Both these hearts give the meaning to the existence of life.
Dapyomas koane chhukh parawai vendaan?
Tami dopnam chhus boh parwayas te gindaan.
Vendun: ویندن: to conduct oneself, practise a course of conduct, show courtesy
I asked, "why do not you bother Yourself with care and affection"?
He said, "I play even with the attribute of care and affection".
Explanation:
Humans always wish some events should go this way or that way according to their perception. God doesn't care about what humans think how universe shall run. Second line affirms the attribute of God as As-Samad i.e., self sufficient, one who doesn't care what others do or think. It has no effect on Him. Even if whole universe disobeys God, it doesn't affect Him.
Dapyomas jaame walyin chhi chey paanas,
Tami dopnam wih amiki chhi la makaanas.
Vihi: وہی: sudden change of condition or appearance/change in a moment from an ordinary state to another/affectation
I asked, "You are draped by garments"
He said, "The affectations in my abode is because of these garments".
Explanation:
Garments here means the Lovers that are all the time attached to the God. Because of these lovers the manifestation of God appears throughout the universe and beyond.
As Allama Iqbal would say, "Ishq Makan-o-Makeen, Ishq Zaman-o-Zameen"
Love is the Space and the Creation, Love is Time and Earth!
Dapyomas jaame kath kith chhukh chi rangaan,
Tami dopnam rangwin chhus ne kaansi hewaan.
Rangaan: رنگان: To dye/colour
Rangwuin: رنگؤن: Price for dying/colouring/painting
I asked, "What for You dye the garments"?
He said, "I don't ask for the rumeneration for dying".
Explanation:
It's God's wish that he take certain people as his lovers. Nobody has any say in it. Nor can anyone intercede in such matter. It's all in God's power as to whom he wishes to take as his lover. Taking no rumeneration keeps His control absolute.
Dapyomas rangewin kone chhukh chi mangaan?
Tami dopnam phaalwith chhem haar yiwaan.
Phaalwith: پھالہ وِتو: Tear/split/worn out
I asked, "Why don't You ask for the rumeneration for dying"?
He said, "I get money when these garments wear down"
Explanation:
When these lovers annihilate themselves in my love, I get their existence as price for the love that I implanted in them.
Dapyomas chhukh chi kunui La shareek,
Tami dopnam ami gachith chhey myeen tareeq.
Tareeq:طریق: Path/mystic path
I asked, "You are the unique without any partner"?
He said, "Beyond this attribute is My way".
Explanation:
If you are unique with no partners then why do you take lovers? Poet gets reply that beyond this attribute is my mystic path wherein lovers become my part.
Dapyomas ath tareeqas hemai zaagai,
Tami dopnam harne chashman sorme laagai.
Zaagai: زاگے: Vigil/Ambush
I said, "I will seek watchfully this mystic path".
He said, "I will apply kohl to you deer eyes".
Explanation:
If you try to be on the path of love I will increase your vision so that you become more beautiful without and see more clearly within. Next couplet confirms it.
Dapymoas sorme lagith kya chhi banana,
Tami dopnam pozz te apuz adde chi nanaan.
I asked, "What happens when the kohl is applied"?
He said, "The truth and falsehood gets evident".
Explanation:
When God gives vision to a lover, he sees the difference between good and evil more clearly.
Dapaan sochh kraal Alifas ma chhi bandi,
Chhey paanai khudawandas khudawandi.
Soch Kraؔal affirms that Alif(God) is not bound by limitations,
He Himself has over-lordship over everything.
Explanation:
God is neither bound by anything, nor has any limitations. He can do whatever He wishes. He has absolute control over everything.
As Mir Taqi Mir would say:
ناحق ہم مجبوروں پر یہ تہمت ہے مختاری کی
چاہتے ہیں سو آپ کریں ہیں ہم کو عبث بدنام کیا
Notes:
1. Dapun: to say, to speak, to order, command; to send a message, to instruct by message; to say to oneself, consider, think, to explain, assertion, enquiry, question, stating of fact, to tell or to request. Meaning depends upon the usage of sentence.
2. I don't see this as equivalent to Shikwa Jawab Shikwa of Allama Iqbal. This poem is more of inquisitiveness than a grudge.
