Be-wafai chhey settha

Disloyalty is galore


وفادأری چھے عنقا, بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا

Wafadaeri chhey Anaqa, be-wafai chhey settha,

Loyalty is (like) Phoenix, disloyalty is galore


Anaqa: Phoenix; an imaginary bird. Here used to denote rarity.


وفادأری نہِ کُنے, میے رآورِم آدنے

افسوس, واویلا, بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا


Wafadaeri ne kunay, mey raavurim aadnay.

Afsoos, wawela, be-wafai chhey settha.


Loyalty nowhere to be found, I lost childhood friends.

Sorry (state of affairs), lamentations (I cry); disloyalty is galore.


Aadnay: Childhood friends (Brother friends) 


پان پیوم سر کرُن, زندسئ پیوم مرُن

بنِتھ آو میے حال کیا, بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا


Paan pyom sarr karun, zind sie pyom marun.

Banith aao haal mey kya; be-wafai chhey settha.


I had to search (faults of) my own self, I had to die while remaining alive.

Look what condition I am in; disloyalty is galore.


کُوفین ہندی کھوتۓ, ازکی یار بأئ چِھتۓ

بے دین تۓ گمراہ, بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا


Koofiyan hindie khotai, azkie yaar baaey chhih-tai.

Be-deen tai gumrah, be-wafai chhey settha.


(Much worse) than people of Kufa, the brothers and friends of today are.

Irreligious and astray (they are), disloyalty is galore.


Koofi: People of Kufa (Iraq) who martyred Hazrat Hussain(ra) even though they were his own people.


نانِ یار یسلہِ ینے, جانِ یار چِھنہ کُنے

یارِ صدیق کجا! بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا


Nan’i yaar yasle yinai, jan’i yaar chih ne kunai.

Yaar-e-Sideeq kuja! Be-wafai chhey settha.


Materialistic friends throng me, friends dear to my life nowhere to be found.

Whither friend Sideeq! Disloyalty is galore.


Yasle: Like a crowd. To throng


Sideeq: Hazrat Abu Bakr Sideeq(ra) who risked his life for his prophet friend.


Kuja: Where, Whither. (Used in comparision)


گرِ نش گوس بیزار, پرس نش پیم پأزار

جدا گوس از خدا, بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا


Garre nish gos bezaar; parass nish peyim paezaar.

Juda gos az khuda; Be-wafai chhey settha.


My family became displeased, strangers become disrespectful,

I got separated from God as well; Disloyalty is galore.


Parr: Stranger, not from one’s own family.

Paezar: Being hit/beaten by footwear. Metaphor: Highest form of disrespect.


یارِ بد سندی کھوتیے, مارِ بد جان چُھتیے

بدس, جانس چُھ دغا, بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا


Yaar-e-bad sindi khotai, Maar-e-badd jaan chhu-tai,

Baddas, jaanas chhu daga, Be-wafai chhey settha.


Better than the bad friend is the (company of) the bad(venomous) serpent,

(Here) good and bad both get deceived (equally); Disloyalty is galore.

شفیع اون میے نبی, شگل چُھم ذکرِ خفی

فضل کر تم میے عطا, بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا


Shafi onmai Nabi, Shugul chum zikr-e-khafi,

Fazl kartam mey ataa, Be-wafai chhey settha.


I plead Prophet (saw) as my intercessor; my preoccupation is silent remembrance,

Bestow me with your grace; Disloyalty is galore.


رحم چُھیوئ شرمندے, کارکنئ بافندے

طمعس چُھ روے سیاہ, بے وفأئ چھے سیٹھا


Rahim chhui sharmandai, Kaarkuni Bafandai,

Tamhas chhu roy e siyah, Be-wafai chhey settha.


Rahim, the cloth weaving artisan, is very ashamed,

Covetousness brings (with itself) the blackening of face (regret); Disloyalty is galore.


Kaarkun e bafandai=Cloth weaving artisan.


This poem was written as a resentment against the townsfolk by Rahim Saeb Sopori.
