3. Lall Dedh: Lall bu drayas...
ژھانڈان لوٗسم
دیں کیہو راتھ
وُچُھم پنڈت
پننہ گرے
سُے میْے
روْٹمس نیچھتُر تہ ساتھ
Transliteration:
Lalle bu draayas lol'e re,
Chhandaan loosum dyen
kyoho raath.
Wuchhum Pandit pan'ni
garre,
Sui mey rotmas nichhtur te
saath.
Vocabulary:
لولہ: Passionate longing
دیں: Day
نیچھتُر: Almanac
ساتھ: Arcturus star
Grierson's translation:
With passionate longing
did I, Lalla, go forth.
Seeking and searching did
I pass the day and night.
Then, Lo, saw I in mine
own house a learned man,
And that was my lucky star and my lucky moment when I laid hold of him.
Jiya Lal Koul's
translation:
For love that would not
let me be,
I, Lalla, set forth in
search of Him.
And toiled and toiled for
days and nights.
Then Lo! The most
auspicious moment of life-
I saw the Pandit in my own home.
Nand Lal Koul's
translation:
My translation:
I, Lalla, ventured in
passionate longing,
(But) lost days and nights
in His search.
Lo! I found Pandit in my
own home,
(And) Laid hold of Him as
my almanac and star.
Explanation:
This vaakh of Lall Dedh
points towards وحدۃ الوجود i.e., "the
Unity of Being". Lall says that she went out to search for Him
but found Him inside her. And once it realised upon her that He and she are
One, she laid hold of Him as her future (almanac) and guide (Arcturus star- the
brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere. The constellation of which this
star is part is considered auspicious constellation). Translation of ساتھ as moment is wrong in my opinion.
Arcturus is called Swati in Sanskrit from which the word ساتھ seems to be derivative. Urdu/Persian
word ساعت however means
moment and the translators seem to have been waylaid by this word.
