للتھ للتھ ودے بو داے

ژتّا مُہچ پییی ماے

روُزی نو پتہِ لوہ لنگرچ ژھاے

 نز سورپھ موٹھے ہاے

 

Transliteration:

Lalith lalith wadai bo daay,

Chitta muhich pey-yi maay.

Roozi no patte loh langrich chhaay,

Niz soruph motthui haay.

 

Vocabulary:

للتھ: From Sanskrit word ललित meaning Gently or Artlessly 

داے: Advice. Grierson says it means Good Sir. 

ژتّا:Sanskrit wordचैतन्या meaning Soul 

مہچ: Of muh i.e., Of illusion 

لوہ لنگر: Being fastened to worldly affairs by an anchor, metaphorically daily drudgery.

نز: One's own 

سورپھ: स्वरूपम् Sanskrit: Means one's true self 

موٹھےُ: To forget

 

Grierson's translation:

Good Sir, for thee I will keep weeping with gentle sound and gentle words.

My Soul! love for the world, begotten of illusion, hath befallen thee.

Not even the shadow of thine iron anchor will survive for thee.

Alas! why hast thou forgotten the nature of thy self?

 

Jiya Lal Kaul's translation:

I will weep and weep for you, my Soul;

The world hath caught you in its spell.

Though you cling to them with the anchor of steel,

Not even the shadow of the things you love

Will go with you when you are dead.

Why then have you forgot your own true Self?

 

Nand Lal Koul's translation:

خود اے لل ماتم کرونگی تجھ پہ میں

دھیرے دھیرے دکھ بھری آواز میں

اے مرے دل یہ تجھے کیا ہو گیا

کر لیا قابو ہے, مایا نے تجھے

سایہ تیرے آہنی لنگر کا بھی

ساتھ تیرا دے نہیں سکتا کبھی

آہ! تو اپنے حقیقی روپ کو

بھول بیٹھا, کس قدر افسوس ہے

 

My translation:

Gently, artlessly I will cry out advice (to you my soul),

O my soul! You have fallen in love with illusion (i.e., this world).

Not even shadow of the worldly affairs will remain (when you are dead),

Alas! You have forgotten your true self?
